			The Elephant Chess Cup is a chess tournament in which teams of four compete against each other in chess matches across four seperate boards. Some teams bring reserves, although that is not required. Each game of chess is played with the 15+5 time control (15 minutes for the whole game with five extra seconds per move). In each match, one point is gained for winning a board and half a point for drawing one. The team that gets more board points across the four boards gains two match points (or one each if it's a 2-2 tie).

			The exact format varies depending on the edition and host of the tournament but past ECC's often involved two stages, the first one splitting the teams into seperate groups where they could qualify for the second stage, in many cases either a single-round robin group stage or a single elimination knockout stage to determine the finalists.
