World Lacrosse Championships
The World Lacrosse Championship is the largest, and most important tournament in the sport, and one of the few championships that include teams made up of mixed gender, all-male or all female rosters, although the playing rules used are specific to the men's game. The World Lacrosse Council sponsors the tournament and is the umbrella organization for the member nations' governing bodies.
Format
The tournament has used varying forms of competition through its history, depending on the number of entrants and the choice of the organizing committee of the winning host bid. Pool play solely within the host nation or on a home & away basis among the teams within a group have both been utilized. On a few occasions, the pool play has been split between co-hosts, with single elimination knockout stage matches also split between them.
History
There have been 21 different nations who have claimed the championship over the 34 previous editions; HUElavia became the most recent first time champion during WLC 34 in Jeckland.
The tournament has been hosted by 27 different nations, with Sarzonia, Cassadaigua (4), and Newmanistan (3) the only repeat hosts.
Now in its 35th edition, the WLC is rated among the top 10 sporting championships that nations aspire to earn a medal at; the tournament has a long history of providing nations with their first opportunity to host a major tournament; and the competition has been fair to the top ranked sides, who prepare for the possibility that underdogs will prevail on the day.
