Note: Wikipedia uses two methods of editing: The Visual Editor (VE) (not yet shown for anonymous editors) and editing through wiki markup (wikitext).

VE editing is chosen when a logged-in user clicks "Edit" at the top of a page or any [Edit] link for a section within the body of a page. Wikitext editing, by contrast, is chosen through the "Edit source" links found to the right of VE's Edit links at the top of a page and to the right of the [Edit] links in the body of a page.

Although VE may allow editors to contribute without having to learn wikimarkup, it masks the underlying wikitext. The explanations and directions on this page are predominantly geared toward wiktext editing, and may not work (and result in errors) if you attempt to follow them using the Visual Editor.
