Wikipedia uses two methods of editing: Visual Editor (VE) and editing through wiki markup (wikitext).

VE editing is chosen when a user clicks "Edit" at the top of a page or any [Edit] link for a section within the body of a page. Wikitext editing, by contrast, is chosen through the "Edit source" links found to the right of VE's Edit links at the top of a page and in the body when an edit section link is moused over.

The explanations and directions on this page are predominantly geared toward wiktext editing, and may not work (and result in errors) if you attempt to follow them using the Visual Editor. For instructions on using the new VisualEditor environment, see Wikipedia:VisualEditor/User guide.
