The EisLiga is the top-tier professional ice hockey league in Calgasia. Established in 1933, it features twelve mixed-gender professional clubs and is overseen by the Calgasian Olympic Committee through EisHockey Calgasia. It is considered to be the second most-followed sporting competition in Calgasia, surpassed only by the Calgasian Bundesliga of football,

At its inception, in 1933, the EisLiga had eight semi-profesional teams, along with other additional eight teams in the EisLiga 2., the second division of the Calgasian Hockey system. This sixteen teams closed structure has been maintained until 2004, where

Structure

The Calgasian domestic hockey system is composed of two divisions: the EisLiga (first tier) and the EisLiga 2 (second tier), each comprising twelve teams starting from the 2004 season. Prior to that, both leagues consisted of eight teams each.

  • Each team plays a double round-robin, for a total of 22 matches per season.
  • The league's regular season standings are based on a point system. Three points are awarded for a win, one point for a draw, and zero points for a loss.
  • The top four teams qualify for the playoffs, consisting of semifinals and a final, each played as a best-of-five series.
  • The playoff champion lifts the prestigious Empress Adelaide Cup, while the regular-season leader receives the Imperial Trophy.
  • The bottom two teams are relegated to the EisLiga 2.

In recent years, the Ministry of Culture and Sports and the National Olympic Committee have led a modernization program for hockey arenas, in collaboration with domestic investors and several industrial sponsors. Most arenas now accommodate between 7,000 and 9,000 spectators, although special outdoor matches are still held in to preserve the unique Calgasian winter-sport tradition.

Teams

Melperk Löwen is the dominant force in the EisLiga with 16 titles and no relegations to the second division ever, the only team to achieve that feature. Bohunice EH has positioned itself as second with 15 titles, thanks to the success in the last 2 decades, while Welser AC is third in all-time table with 12 titles. Together, those three teams form the so-called Big Three.

Notable teams include HC Lílov, the hockey section of multi-sports club Goldstadt SK, EC Radegg and EV Zillertal.

Governance

The league is administered by EisHockey Calgasia, which establishes competition regulations, oversees officiating, manages player registration, enforces disciplinary rulings, and supervises the licence criteria required for club participation in different tiers. EisHockey Calgasia is part of the national Olympic Committee, who oversees sports in the country.

EisHockey Calgasia also coordinates the rest of the national competitions, manages relations with continental governing bodies, and establishes long-term policies for facilities, safety standards, and domestic talent development.

Rivalries

Bohunice EH vs Welser AC

Widely considered the most heated and high-risk rivalry in Calgasian sports. It reflects long-standing social and regional contrasts: Bohunice is a city with a Czech-majority population and a distinct Bohemian cultural background, while Welser AC draws support primarily from communities with Austrian heritage. Differences in local identity, demographics, and historical development contribute to the prominence of this fixture, which has occasionally been associated with elevated security measures.

Fights between players in the rink and riots between rival fans are not uncommon, with a special coverage from police every match.

Goldstadt SK vs Melperk Löwen

A rivalry shaped by cultural identity and political symbolism. Goldstadt, the imperial capital, is predominantly Austrian and associated with the government, civil service, and aristocracy. Melperk, by contrast, has a Czech majority and is home to Charles University of Melperk, giving it a more intellectual, liberal, and academic atmosphere. Their clashes often transcend sport.

Melperk Löwen vs Bohunice EH

A friendly, heritage-based rivalry between two Bohemian clubs. Their matches are competitive but marked by mutual respect and shared regional identity.

HC Lílov vs EV Zillertal

HC Lílov and EV Zillertal maintain a rivalry rooted in geographic proximity within the mountainous regions of Calgasia. The two clubs have historically attracted strong local followings, and their matches are recognised for a consistently high level of competitiveness.

EC Klosterling vs ESV Kaiserbad

A rivalry based on local proximity, historical competition, and contrasting playing styles. Klosterling’s structured, disciplined hockey clashes with Kaiserbad’s more offensive philosophy.

Popularity

The EisLiga is considered to be the second most followed competition in Calgasia after the association football Bundesliga, although this claim is contested by the Calgasian Water Polo League, which also attracts great crowds and attention.

Sponsorships are common in the EisLiga due to the popularity of the competition, with KTT Telekom, the state-owned telecommunications company, as main sponsor of the league. Some arenas, like the Zerotin EisZentrum in Goldstadt or the Calia Telekom Arena of Melperk have also naming sponsorships, and the teams' jerseys are allowed to have sponsors.

CRF Sport, the sports network of CRF, the Calgasian public-service broadcaster, owns the television rights of the EisLiga, broadcasting most of the matches. Additionally, CRF 2 airs nationally one match per week. Moreover, local and national radios broadcast the matches.
