Persetang Tangaram won the latest edition of 2025 and making them the most successful club in the league by collecting 2 titles.
History
Before the merger (pre-2016)
An idea to establish a second-tier league was circulated in early 1980's after Liga Sepakbola Matawis launch in 1968 as the main football league in the country. It is use to share the burden held by LSM as the league has expand greatly. In 1978, LSM was joined by 34 clubs. Then Liga 2 Sepakbola Matawis was established in 1983 with the first season held in 1986 with 18 clubs or half of LSM members at the time.
BMFA implemented professionalism into their system in 1994. But only LSM, the top-tier that was transform to fully professional while Liga 2's team can choose to become professional or semi-pro. With the merger plan circulated, BMFA started it in 2010 to invite clubs from other regional leagues. But the plan failed. BMFA then created Matawis Professional Football in 2013 and followed by the creation of Bhumi League program in 2015.
Early years (2016-2022)
Bhumi Championship League was started in 2016 as the second-tier to Bhumi Elite League which replace Liga 2. This new league consist of 18 teams from the former Liga 2 and East Andalas Region. Angker Wengker become the inaugural champion. The league success to attract sponsorship and supporters. But it still dominated by clubs from the Metropole. Until another change in 2023, only PSPS Payung Sekaki, a non-Metropole club that have won the title. Other notable clubs such as PSBR Balawan Raya and FC Dumai were quite strong in early years and managed to qualify to Elite League through playoff. PSBR Balawan Raya continue to stay at the top flight until 2023. While FC Dumai was relegated back to Championship League following the introduction of third-tier, Bhumi Pro League which decrease the number of clubs per league from 18 to 12 clubs. FC Dumai then fall to Pro League in 2022 after finished last in 2021. While during the Pro League period, no non-Metropole clubs have managed to qualify from them to Championship League.
Wave of change
Bhumi League welcome new clubs from other regional league in 2023 which create changes to the clubs composition within Championship League. Thus, increase the number of non-Metropole clubs in the league. Only 4 out of 12 clubs were from the Metropole at the 2023 season. But in the span of 2 years, before another change implemented, more non-Metropole clubs being relegated than being promoted to the league. However in 2024, the second non-Metropole club eventually win the title. They are PSTK Tanjung Karang.
The new reorganization in 2025 bring a lot of change in the league. Four former Elite League clubs have to be relegated to Championship League including former Championship winner, Persetang Tangaram who finished 10th in 2024 season. The league also welcomed more non-Metropole clubs. But then again, the mission of the merger is to improve clubs from outside the Metropole and bring their presence into a higher stage.
