Current: 2024 Manggala Super League

Manggala Super League (Basatu: Liga Super Manggala), is the multi-association men’s professional association football league under the umbrella of Rajamanggala Commonwealth. It consists of clubs from 3 associations: Girinatha Empire, Sagotra and Sao Dominggo. It has been organized by the Manggala Football Federation (MFF) since its inauguration in 1994. Despite being independent, MFF has close ties with all 3 football associations with which they cooperate with to create this league. It was an expansion to Manggala Champions Cup which aim to develop professionalism into the Commonwealth.

History

Competition between clubs from Sagotra and Girinatha had been started from 1962 with the foundation of Manggala Champions Cup following the establishment of Rajamanggala Commonwealth. The competition was aimed to strengthen the relationship between the two countries which is already connected through their monarch. The competition expanded in 1983 with the addition of Sao Dominggo. The country joins the Commonwealth in 1978 and participated in the competition from 1983. At the time, the clubs were either amateur or semi-professional. During that time, clubs from Sagotra were clearly dominating.

In late of 1980's, professionalism movement spread into the Commonwealth. However, the transition to professionalism was very slow. Clubs from the 3 countries has had a similar type. They were funded by the city or town where they reside for their finance. And as football is very huge in the Commonwealth, these clubs are sometimes use as political drive by the mayor. The club's success was seen as the success of the mayor. Mitra Dinoyo scandal in 1987 open up a string of corruption happened inside many clubs in Sagotra and Girinatha. This revelation pushed the association of two countries to accelerate the professionalism so the club will not be depended on the city's budget again to run. And politician won't use the club as their money laundry place for their corruption.

A meeting was held between the officials of PSKS (Persatuan Sepakbola Kemaharajaan Sagotra, Football Association of The Kingdom of Sagotra), PSMG (Persatuan Sepakbola Mandala Girinatha, Girinatha Empire Football Association) and FFSD (Football Federation of Sao Dominggo, Federação de Futebol de São Domingo) in 1991. The meeting laid out the foundation of a professional league between the three association and the creation of Manggala Football Federation as the organizer of the new league. They decide to expand Manggala Champions Cup to accommodate the new league. Manggala Super League was inaugurated in 1992, and they plan for a 12-clubs league, 4 clubs from each association. But the plan didn't go true as clubs from Sao Dominggo are less enthusiast to participate. Thus, affected the start of the competition which had to be pushed back until 1994. The inaugural season was competed by 10 clubs: VIOS Westervelden, Perselatah Labuan Fatah, Areyo Dinoyo, Amangkurat Kartasura (Sagotra); LC Kubontingguh, Kandapat Telagawaja, UNI Oebobo, Mitra Sandubaya (Girinatha); AS Kaili Colmera and Atletico Tirilolo (Sao Dominggo). And after 27 matches, it was won by LC Kubontingguh.

The league went into a hiatus in 1997 and 1998. Girinatha financial crisis affected the clubs which makes the 1997 season was cancelled. While huge revolution strike happening in Sagotra in 1998 become the reason of the season's cancellation. When the political and economic situation in the countries get better, the league was resume in 1999. The restarted league was won dramatically by LC Kubontingguh who won only by goal difference against the runner-up, VIOS Westervelden. In 2001, the league welcome 2 new members, PSHS Hujung Salaka from Sagotra and Sporting Becora from Sao Dominggo. The season also become the first title for Sao Dominggo's club and the only title for AS Kaili Colmera.

The 2000's was dominated by VIOS Westervelden after the club won 5 consecutive titles from 2003 to 2007. But then the surprise era happened in 2010's as new champion continue to arise. Perselatah Labuan Fatah (2010, 2019), Sporting Becora (2011), Griya Anyar Karanganyar (2013), Kandapat Telagawaja (2015) and PSHS Hujung Salaka (2016) were won their title in the decade. Between the 2000's and 2010's, the league has expanded greatly and reaching 17 clubs in 2018, their largest until the 2024. But it also saw some fallout.

After reaching their best placement in 2009, Mitra Sandubaya was expelled from the league after the 2010 season. Despite reaching 6th place that season, the club was facing financial difficulties which lead to the club failed to pay their players wages for more than 6 months. The expulsion was seen harsh by some fans and critics, but MFF defend the decision and stated that they will readmit the club if they are financially stable. The club made a comeback to the league in 2018 with a new name, Sandubaya United. Persehita Hiang Tasik faced a similar treatment after a corruption scandal struck the club.

Despite the league success, MFF stressed out the fact that Sao Dominggo is left behind. In 2010, MFF renew their plan with an 18-clubs league with an equal 6 clubs per association. However, until 2020 only 3 clubs are admitted from Sao Dominggo. MFF then decided to create a new quota plan with their existing 18-clubs league. They eventually give 7 clubs quota for Sagotra and Girinatha. While Sao Dominggo is only given 4 clubs quota. The federation finally achieve their plan in 2024 season after Persehita Hiang Tasik rejoin the league and completed the quota for Sagotra and Academia Oecusse from Sao Dominggo join to fill up the last quota for the association.

Competition format

There are 16 clubs in Manggala Super League, 18 from 2024 season. During the course of the season (February to October) the teams play a double round robin system, which means they play twice, once at home and once at their opponent's stadium.
