"Marianne", officially the "Marianne Republic" (Azertienne: « République Mariannoise ») is a unitary semi-presidential republic in the far western Goose Coast of Rushmore, covering an area of 541,541 square kilometres (209,080 sq miles). It shares land borders with Erathore, New Sirain and Whirl Islands in the form of Ayacucho. It is also separated by the Sea of Victory from Mytanija and Swartaz, the former of whom the nation shares perhaps its’ closest relationship. Marianne has 61 million inhabitants and had a lengthy stretch as Rushmore’s representative in the World Assembly, and was long considered one of the region’s pre-eminent cultural, economic and diplomatic powers.
Etymology
Marianne is home to many proto-Wiguese populations, and the island of Tchérec is still a majority indigenous population. It has in theory always been inhabited, but was settled by Azertian seed traders in year 68 of the Azertian calendar. The Azertian traders were thrilled to arrive on what is currently Île d’Élisabeth to find that not far inland from the beaches were apple trees with many varietals not available in Azerty. As word spread, settlers came from Azerty to “Nouvelle-Azertie”, or “Côte des Pommes”. The name “Côte des Pommes” was difficult for the non-Azertophonic indigenous population, which pidgined into “Cotdelapoms”, the name of the nation for decades, until the Alexandre Bruneau government wished to promote the Azertian language and formally changed the name to Marianne, after a symbol from RLStates.
