The Event

On October 17, 2017 (local datetime), the nation of Savigliane fell through an interdimensional portal and were mysteriously transported to the region of Atlantian Oceania, in our dimension. While interdimensional portals are fairly common in our reality, this is the first known instance of one accidentally being opened in the reality from which Savigliane originates. As a result, the nation was forcibly cut off from its dimension, resulting in a large number of refugees from other countries, as well as missing and internally displaced Savigliano persons.

While Savigliane's pre-teleportation population stood at 8.1 million, roughly 270,000 Saviglianos are believed to have been in other countries at the time of the teleportation, leaving them presumed missing. Additionally, 460,000 foreign nationals were in Savigliane at the time; thus, Savigliane's current population is estimated at 8.3 million. The events of October 17, 2017, sparked a national panic that caused extensive property damage, especially in the cities of Porto Vecchio and L'Escarene, and killed an estimated 800 people.

While violence has drastically declined in the weeks since the teleportation, the economic impacts of the teleportation are immense. Savigliane has completely been cut off from the global trade network that it was formerly connected to, and supply shortages have struck the nation as the government scrambles to find alternate sources for such goods. Additionally, much of Savigliane's wealth comes in the form of equity in foreign companies, as well as foreign direct investment projects from countries such as Occitania and Caledonia, all of which is now gone. The government has estimated that the teleportation threatens to shrink the national GDP by upwards of 45%.
