The Republic of Prosecutors
The Republic of Prosecutors (Shingoryeoite Korean: 검찰공화국) is a Quebeco-Shingoryeoite series of political thriller films, originally inspired by the 2004 novel of the same name written by Hwang Jae-Nam. The film follows the political developments of Hangyeong, a fictional middle-power state set in the near-future, as Yang Seong-Yeol, a corrupt, amoral chief prosecutor, rises to the presidency of the state in times of economic and social uncertainty. Each film deals with the themes of separation of power, state-led media blackout, loops of 'fairness' as a concept, and vigilantism. While the films of the series are narratively connected, they are not stylistically connected and are often considered to be separate in orientation.
Produced and directed by Montesierra Pictures, the series began with Escort, First Lady (2060), directed by Hong Soo-Deok. Hong also directed its immediate sequel, The Republic of Prosecutors (2065), while The Throne of Blood (2067), the third film of the installment, was directed by Shimabukuro Jyo. The franchise has achieved immense success at both domestic and worldwide box office, with all three films selling over 10 million admissions in Quebec and Shingoryeo, and has grossed over $1.8 billion worldwide. All three films are critically well received, with its first installment, Escort, First Lady, honoured with the Pomme d'Or at the 2060 Dongnae Film Festival.
The next three films of the series, set to take place ten years after the resolution of the Hangyeongese Civil War in 2045, are currently in the works, with Emerson Hahm and Jang Yoo-Hong pair set to direct the project.
