World Lacrosse Championships
The World Lacrosse Championship is the largest, and most important tournament in the sport, and one of the few championships that include teams made up of mixed gender, all-male or all female rosters, although the playing rules used are specific to the men's game. The World Lacrosse Council sponsors the tournament and is the umbrella organization for the member nations' governing bodies.
Format
The tournament has used varying forms of competition through its history, depending on the number of entrants and the choice of the organizing committee of the winning host bid. Pool play solely within the host nation or on a home & away basis among the teams within a group have both been utilized. On a few occasions, the pool play has been split between co-hosts, with single elimination knockout stage matches also split between them.
History
There have been 23 different nations which have claimed the championship over the 42 previous editions; Baker Park became the most recent first time champion during WLC 42, which they hosted. Sarzonia claimed their record 9th title and fourth consecutive championship with an undefeated run at the 40th WLC in Banija.
The tournament has been hosted by 28 different nations, with Cassadaigua (5) Sarzonia & Banija (4 each), and Newmanistan & Baker Park (3) the only repeat hosts.
The milestone 40th edition placed the WLC into unique company as one of the longer running championship tournaments in the multiverse. It has seen newcomers announce their arrival with breakout finishing results that allow advancement quickly through the WLC Rankings; and several nations have gotten their first notice as hosts of a large event with their organization of the tournament.
