The World Cup of Hockey is the international ice hockey tournament which serves as the sport's world championship. It is regarded as the successor tournament to the Aglukark-Cherry Cup, which had lasted for 20 editions before becoming defunct.
The tournament's format and competition rules are highly variable and depend on the host elected for each edition. The usual format is a group stage followed by knockout rounds. Some tournaments have been held only in the host country, while others have held the group stage as a round robin with participants playing home and away. Similarly, while single elimination is currently the most common knockout phase format, in past tournaments playoff series have been used and the 41st World Cup of Hockey even utilised a double-elimination format.
Prior to the 26th tournament (2015 OOC), the World Cup of Hockey Federation was established by participating national associations to formally administer the competition.
