The Saltsteadish Football League (Saltsteadish: Såutsteidisħ Footballslige), commonly referred to as the SFL, is the governing body for nationwide professional association football league competition in Saltstead, serving under the authority of the Royal Saltsteadish Football Association.
Competition
The 36 member clubs of the SFL are grouped into two divisions of eighteen clubs each. In any given season a club plays each of the others in the same division twice, once at their home stadium and once at their opponents' home stadium. Consequently, each club plays a total of 34 league games each season.
In the first half of the season, called the Depart, each club plays once against each league opponent, for a total of 17 games; in the second half of the season, called the Retour, teams play in exactly the same order as the first half of the season, with home and away teams reversed. The Depart and Retour function as independent tournaments for the purpose of crowning champions, with the team with the most points at the end of the tournament winning the divisional championship; points from the Depart are not carried over to the Retour.
If two or more teams are tied on points, then goal difference, goals scored, away goals, games won and disciplinary record are used as tiebreakers in that order; if still equal, the clubs are deemed to occupy the same position. If an absolute tie must be broken to determine the championship, relegation or qualification to domestic playoffs or international competitions, a tiebreaker match at a neutral venue determines the higher-ranked club.
The two Champions Division title winners qualify for CAFA LigAnaia and are seeded based on aggregate record. If one team wins both Champions Division titles, the second berth passes to the winner of the Saltsteadish Royal Cup, provided that club has retained the right to play in the SFL for the subsequent season; otherwise, the second berth passes to the Champions Division runners-up with the better aggregate record.
Additionally, each season, the three clubs with the worst aggregate records in each division are relegated. The relegated Champions Division clubs are replaced by three clubs decided through the SFL Challengers Division playoffs, while the relegated Challengers Division clubs are replaced by Saltstead's two third-tier league champions and the winner of a two-legged playoff between the third-tier runners-up.
