The Talamia national football team represents the Socialist Republic of Talamia in international football competitions. It is controlled by TSS (Talamia Sports Summaka), the governing body for sports in Talamia. The current team manager is Kaireis Faidros. Talamia's home ground is the Ebdemar Au'tokra Stadium, in the nation's capital city Clinepalas.

The national team has competed in the World Cup and in the Cup of Harmony, before becoming the founding and first member of the Democratic Socialist Assembly Football Federation (DSAFF) on 5 February, 2021. From that day, Talamia began to keep track of its history and official statistics.

Talamia is one of the few national teams that can boast its presence in all tournaments organized by DSAFF in its history, including the prestigious Comrades Cup and Frost Cup. Talamia won the 2022 edition of the Comrades Cup and appeared in the final of the 2022 Frost Cup.

The team is known as the Hoopoes, from the national animal. Black and red are the common colours, as it is in the national flag. Talamia has notable rivalries with other DSAFF affiliate nations, such as Itini, Yucatan, UFS Mexico and Macbon. Talamia occupies the second place of the DSAFF MexiCola Ranking since September 2022.

History

Origins

Following the unification of the seven kingdoms of Talamia in 1786, HoopoeBall was designated as the national sport. It took more than a century before football started gaining popularity. The first documented football match in Talamia dates back to 1890, involving the clubs Ptoco and SF Lampride from two neighborhoods in the Talamian capital, Clinepalas. Five years later, eight teams from across Talamia founded the Talamian Alfa League, which remains the top tier of the Talamian football league system today.

In the first decade of Talamian football, clubs were the main participants. However, in 1906, the seven regions of Talamia agreed to organize an interregional tournament, selecting their best players. This led to the creation of the Seven Kingdoms Tournament, held for nine editions until 1914. The tournament featured a double round-robin format and was played during breaks from the Alfa League, in summer and winter. Mentrenalio's regional team won five editions, Pento won two, and Uperinde and Epicesi each won one. The tournament ceased when TSS decided to form a single national team.

Early history

The national team's first match was on 30 November 1914, a friendly against Sörslúth, organized to ease political tensions. Held at Ebdemar Au'tokra Stadium in Clinepalas, the game drew twenty thousand spectators and saw Talamia win 6-2, with Uptele Trakute of Ptoco scoring the first goal. A month later, a rematch in Eigobair, Sörslúth's capital, resulted in a 3-0 victory for Talamia. This success prompted Talamia Sports' Summaka to invest in the national team, appointing Epitede Arkha, then coach of Lampride, as manager.

For its first 105 years, Talamia's national team did not play official matches. Following the decline of the Alfa League in 1966, the national team ceased playing but resumed in 1974, thanks to Noto Plousi, owner of Fortis Epops, and the revival of the top league. The team gained popularity with famous players like Ensem Eio and Sanisla Pedalisismi.

First official appereances

In 2019, TSS appointed Pedalisismi as manager for the team's first official tournament, the 2019 ILFA. Despite a 4-3 aggregate defeat to Lo Santano in the qualification round, this marked Talamia's entry into competitive football. Subsequently, Talamia participated in the first NSLeft Association Football Tournament (NAFT) without needing a qualifier, advancing directly to the final stage. Drawn in group D with the Democratic Republic of Cacusia, Maoux, and Mon Silanies, Talamia won all group stage matches and the quarter-finals, but the tournament was halted, and the NAFF disbanded, leaving Talamia without official competitions again.

On 10 May 2020, it was announced that Talamia would participate in the eighty-fifth edition of the World Cup, admitted to the qualifiers among 197 teams. In their first pre-tournament friendly, Talamia defeated The Jovannic 2-1. Despite being newcomers, the Hoopoes finished fifth in their 13-team group, collecting 37 points. Following this, they entered the seventy-seventh Cup of Harmony but did not advance past the group stage, although they managed to beat Chromatika.

In early 2021, Talamia entered the World Cup qualifiers for the 88th edition. Ranked two hundred twenty-first globally, coach Sanisla Pedalisismi aimed to reach the play-offs. The team exceeded expectations, finishing third in group 10, but missed the play-offs, leading to Pedalisismi's resignation. Concurrently, 38-year-old captain Ansem Egemon retired, marking the end of an era. Ensem Eio, fresh from winning the Alfa League with Alla Fofokoy, was appointed as the new manager, and defender Timo Fulatto became the new captain.

DSAFF

On 5 February 2021, TSS founded the DSA Football Federation to promote football on the planet Delusia. As the first official member, Talamia hosted the inaugural DSAFF Comrades Cup, which started on 14 May 2021. In their opening match, Talamia drew 1-1 with Chan Island, with forward Lignus Fonè scoring the first official DSAFF goal. Under coach Pedalisismi, Talamia topped group A but was eliminated in the quarterfinals by future winners Ardelark.

In December 2021, with new coach Ensem Eio, Talamia participated in the first DSAFF Frost Cup. Expectations were high, but the team finished last in group B, losing two games and drawing one. The poor performance led to Eio's dismissal, and Hemza Allouche from Ardelark was briefly appointed before leaving due to his nation's withdrawal from DSAFF.

In 2022, Talamia thus underwent another coaching change, appointing Kaireis Faidros as the new head coach. Faidros, the first female coach in the national team's history, previously managed the women's national team before it merged with the men's. Under her leadership, Talamia achieved an unexpected triumph in the DSAFF Comrades Cup. The team won the tournament by defeating the host nation Lannistter 3-1 in the final. Faidros was awarded the title of best coach of the tournament, while Polemiste Ntomenika was recognized as the best goalkeeper. Following this victory, Talamia climbed to the second position in the MexiCola ranking, just behind Lannistter, and has maintained this position ever since.

After their success in the Comrades Cup, Talamia aimed for a second consecutive title in the 2022 DSAFF Frost Cup, hosted by Nordustra. Continuing under the guidance of Kaireis Faidros, Talamia reached the final but fell to UFS Mexico. Despite the loss, the team's performance demonstrated their growing strength on the international stage.

In the 2023 DSAFF Comrades Cup, Talamia, still coached by Faidros, won Group D but was eliminated in the quarter-finals by the future champions, Akach. This result showed the competitive consistency of the team, even though they could not repeat their previous year's success.

The 2023 DSAFF Frost Cup was co-hosted by Lannistter and Kurdiastan. Talamia excelled in Group D, advancing alongside Montecrux and eliminating Akach. The team continued their strong performance, defeating Fushcor in the round of 16 and their rivals Macbon in the quarter-finals. However, they were defeated in the semi-finals by the eventual winners, Vicures Islands. In the third-place playoff, Talamia lost to Montecrux, finishing fourth. Captain Timo Fulatto's excellent performance earned him a place in the tournament's best team.

Nickname

Talamian team is commonly known by fans as "The Hoopoes". The hoopoe is the national animal of Talamia. In Talamian culture, it has an emblematic meaning related to wisdom and integrity and change, while its crest indicates royalty.

Kits and crest

Talamia's traditional home colours are red and black shirts, red or black shorts and white or black socks, incorporating all colours of the Talamian flag. The very first kit worn by Talamia national team in its debut match against Sörslúth was all-red. Therefore, over the years the team has re-proposed the historic design, wearing similar all-red jerseys. The national team wore white shorts only on the outfit used between 1977 and 1978. The uniform was so unpopular that it was replaced after just one season.

Even though Talamia's first away kits were total black, starting in 1974 - the year of the resumption of Talamian football - TSS decided that the team would wear simple white shirts in away matches, in order to cushion travel costs. From necessity, tradition was born and still today Talamia's traditional away colours are white shirts and shorts and black socks.

Talamia's third kit has always coincided with the goalkeeper's first kit, which colours are green shirts, shorts and socks - recalling the laurel on the national flag.

The badge of the Talamia national football team has a laurel crown, a symbol of peace introduced on the national flag in 1786, incorporating the letters "TFF" in its center. It was briefly replaced in the 90's by hoopoe's feathers, and restored in the 2000's.

In April 2021, after having firmly entered the professional football arena, the national team decided to forge a relationship with the technical sponsor Tahuatxi, from the nation of Txakhaxi. The agreement provides for a complete restyling of the national team badge and jerseys. The new uniforms and new jerseys made their debut in the eighty-eighth World Cup and in the inaugural edition of the Comrades Cup. Tahuatxi has completely modernized the badge, introducing the red and black colors typical of the national team and the image of a hoopoe, to recall its nickname. The new jerseys do not deviate much from tradition. The away shirt has a small novelty: a stylized red hoopoe on the left side. For the first time, however, a third shirt is designed, completely orange and with references to the plumage of the hoopoe.

Home stadium

Talamia have always played their home matches in Ebdemar Au'tokra historic stadium, in Clinepalas. Initially built for HoopoeBall - Talamia national sport - the stadium became the national team's home since its founding.

Talamia played their first match at the stadium in 1914 against Sörslúth. The stadium has undergone many renovations over time, before being permanently closed and then demolished in 2015, in its hundredth birthday. For a period of three years, the team played their home games in various stadiums around Talamia as the Ebdemar Au'tokra was beaing completely rebuilt.

The first match played in the new stadium that just reopened took place on 22 April 2018 and it was once again against Sörslúth. The stadium is today owned by the city of Clinepalas, being considered cultural heritage.

Media coverage

All Talamia matches are broadcast by Pro Diorux Sports, since the foundation of Talamia's most famous pay-tv sports channel.

Before the birth of Pro Diorux, from the 1950s to the 1980s, the matches were broadcast free-to-air on national television's first channel. From 1977 to today, the official commentator of the matches of the Talamia National football Team is Gian Gianvilipendio, the most well-known sports commentator in the nation, whose voice is closely linked to the glories and failures of the national team's recent history. Gian Gianvilipendio was replaced in only one case, in 1994, by his colleague Auxe Aggelia, due to illness.
