World Cup 88 was an international football tournament held in Cassadaigua and Chromatika. Nephara entered the tournament as the defending World Cup champions, but were eliminated by Banija in the round of 16. Turori won its first World Cup title in the final against The Holy Empire and its team of Great Old Ones, who nonetheless won the hearts of many with its Great Old Ones Friendship Initiative. By winning the tournament, Turori became the third nation to complete the Triple Crown, having previously won Baptism of Fire 2 and four Cup of Harmony titles.

Qualification

Main article: World Cup 88 qualification

The 180 teams entering the qualifying phase were drawn into 18 groups of ten teams, each contested as a home-and-away double round-robin. The winners of each qualifying group and the six runners-up with the best records directly qualified for the final tournament. The twelve remaining runners-up were paired into six two-legged ties, with the winners of each tie qualifying for the finals.

Group stage

Tiebreakers

In the group stage, the ranking of teams in each group will be based on the following criteria:

  1. Points (3 points for a win, 1 point for a draw, 0 points for a loss);
  2. Points in matches between teams initially tied on points;
  3. Goal difference in matches between teams initially tied on points;
  4. Overall goal difference;
  5. Drawing of lots (OOC: cumulative roleplay bonus).

In the event that more than two teams are initially tied and at least one team wins or loses a tiebreaker, the tiebreaking procedure will continue with the next criterion on the list, with results from all initially tied teams still included in the "head-to-head" calculation.

In the knockout stage, if a match is tied at the end of normal playing time, two fifteen-minute periods of extra time will be played. If the match is still tied at the end of extra time, a penalty shoot-out will be held to determine the winners.

Draw

Teams were seeded into one of four pots according to the KPB ranking system, updated as of the end of World Cup 88 qualification. Chromatika and Cassadaigua were placed in Pot 1 by right as hosts and automatically assigned to Group A and Group E respectively. The remaining teams were drawn consecutively into Groups A to H. The positions of each team in their group (for the purposes of determining the match schedules in each group) were determined by a computerised draw after the conclusion of the draw ceremony.
